The adequacy decision between the EU and JP is in place and is now an available safeguard to organisations which have the requirement to send personal data from Europe to Japan. While this agreement is an important achievement, from a business perspective the struggle to identify risks, data flow, accountability and to ensure appropriate mechanisms for data subjects to support their rights, can be very time and budget consuming due its complexity.
In order to handle the complexity of legal and technical obligations, experts known as data protection officer (DPO) take an important role within an organisation by supporting and connecting several domains and resources to build, monitor and maintain compliance. Until today the importance of this role is still underestimated and shouldn’t only be considered as legal obligation, as there are more benefits to take into consideration.
